Welcome back to the Mid Market Insider!

Today, I’m breaking down why waiting until you’re ready to sell can be one of the biggest threats to a successful exit—and how preparing years in advance can build buyer confidence, strengthen your negotiating position, and give you more options when it’s finally time to sell.

Thinking About Selling Your Business?

If you're considering a sale or simply exploring your options, feel free to learn more and start the conversation below:

If I asked business owners what the biggest threat to a successful exit is, I'd probably hear answers like:

A weak economy.

Higher interest rates.

Private equity firms slowing down.

Or even competitors.

Those things certainly matter.

But in my experience, the biggest threat is usually something much closer to home.

It's waiting too long to prepare.

Many owners assume they can start getting their business ready a few months before going to market. The problem is that buyers don't just evaluate where your business is today… they evaluate how much confidence they have in where it will be after they own it.

And many of the things that build that confidence take years, not months.

In this video, I cover:

✅ Why waiting until you're ready to sell can significantly reduce your options

✅ The four assumptions many owners make that can hurt their exit

✅ Why buyers evaluate businesses very differently than owners do

✅ How preparation increases the odds your business will sell successfully

✅ How to start looking at your business through a buyer's lens

If you're planning to sell your business within the next 1–5 years, this is a conversation worth having now… not because you're selling tomorrow, but because the strongest evidence buyers trust is the kind that takes time to build.

That’s all for today’s newsletter! Thanks for reading!

📅 Next Week:

In next week’s edition, I’ll break down why having a great CFO doesn’t necessarily mean your business is ready to sell.

And how building the right team at the right time can uncover what buyers actually care about, strengthen your business before it reaches the market, and improve your odds of a better exit.

Keep building,
Nick
