Welcome back to the Mid Market Insider!

Today, I’m breaking down why working fewer hours doesn’t necessarily mean your business can run without you—and how becoming truly transferable can dramatically increase your valuation, buyer pool, and leverage when it’s time to sell.

Thinking About Selling Your Business?

If you're considering a sale or simply exploring your options, feel free to learn more and start the conversation below:

As you know, when exiting your business, buyers are looking for transferability.

In other words – can this business run without you?

But sometimes, I talk with business owners who think their business is no longer dependent on them… and yet a buyer definitely wouldn’t see it that way.

Like for example:

We bought a business a while back where the owner genuinely believed he had removed himself.

He said, “I’m only working 3 to 4 hours a day.”

And sure… that was true. But here’s what he missed:

He had been doing that job for 20+ years. So he knew every shortcut, every relationship, every decision instinctively.

When you drop a new operator into that same role?

There’s no chance they’re doing it in 3–4 hours a day. Not even close. So from our perspective, as the buyer, that was a big problem.

In the end, we managed to get it all squared away. But that issue could potentially have killed the deal.

That’s why today, I’m going to show you how to step further back from your business to become the operational chairman buyers actually want to acquire – and why this one shift can dramatically increase your valuation, your buyer pool, and the amount of control you have over a deal.

Inside, I cover:

  • The two big “mental traps” that owners typically fall into when it comes to their role in their business...

  • A simple 3-step process to easily transition into the “operational chairman” role buyers are looking for…

  • Why this one shift can increase your leverage, your valuation, and your buyer pool

If you’re planning to sell in the next few years – or even thinking about it – then this is one of the most important shifts you can make. And I encourage you to take a few minutes to find out how.

That’s all for today’s newsletter! Thanks for reading!

📅 Next Week:

In next week’s edition, I’ll break down why your financials need to do more than simply show strong numbers—and how the way you present them can dramatically influence how buyers perceive your business.

And why financial credibility can be the difference between a buyer gaining confidence in your company… or walking away from the deal.

Keep building,
Nick
